The swift successor to the Editors’ Choice-awarded M2 iteration of the 16-inch MacBook Pro arrives in the form of the Editors’ Choice-awarded M3 generation. With hardware continuously advancing in speed, it’s easy to lament if one had recently invested in the earlier version, particularly for rendering work, as the generational improvements in graphics architecture result in significant performance enhancements for certain tasks. As expected, it maintains its reputation as a stellar fusion of design, performance, and battery longevity.
Retaining the same design as its predecessor, which debuted in early 2023 and has remained unchanged since 2021, the MBP 16’s appearance is likely familiar to many. Given this consistency, I won’t delve into my thoughts on it, as they remain unchanged. For those curious, my review of the early 2023 model of the MacBook Pro 16 provides insight. However, notable alterations include the color and performance (thanks to the new chip), along with my updated methodologies for display testing, which will be the primary focus of this review.
Ultimately, the MacBook Pro serves as a mobile workstation, which largely justifies its price tag, especially for configurations like the $3,999 (£4,099, AU$6,899) model I evaluated. Apple continues to emphasize workstation and gaming performance, with ray tracing and mesh shaders among the notable additions to graphics processing with the M3. However, the availability of high-profile games remains limited, and Apple’s upcoming games lineup fails to impress. While game designers may find merit in it, their primary focus may still lean towards other platforms.
The base configuration features the 12-core CPU/18-core GPU variant of the M3 Pro processor, accompanied by 18GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. While suitable for many non-professional or social pro photo editing tasks, it may fall short for those seeking more than just a large HDR screen. For tasks warranting the investment in this laptop, a minimum of a 1TB SSD and potentially upgrading to 36GB of RAM would likely be beneficial.
